According to the draft Master Plan 2019, Sengkang is planned to be liveable and self-sufficient with easily accessible shops, healthcare, schools, community facilities and parks. Commercial nodes, industrial estates and business parks within or nearby the town helps to provide nearer job opportunities for residents.
A new Buangkok Integrated Development has long been in URA’s plan since the Draft Master Plan 2013. Once again it is highlighted in the draft Master Plan 2019 as a mixed use development integrating the Buangkok MRT Station, a bus interchange, community club, hawker centre and retail amenities. Residents can look forward to generous public spaces that open up opportunities for community and social events. It has finally been unveiled as Sengkang Grand Residences and Sengkang Grand Mall.
Over at Seletar, the Seletar Aerospace Park is the leading regional hub for aerospace activities. The 320-hectare aerospace park is home to more than 60 MNCs and local enterprises. Apart from work, 13 bungalows have been refurbished to create new amenities and food & beverage outlets at The Oval @ Seletar Aerospace Park. The estate exudes an old charm, with open green spaces in an idyllic colonial setting. The Park features an airport themed play space and many lifestyle restaurants and cafes like Wheeler’s Estate, Youngs Bar and Restaurent, Di Wei Teo Chew Restaurant, Soek Seng 1954 Bicycle Cafe and many more.
As part of a conscious and deliberate effort to protect natural spaces and increase ecological resilience, the URA Draft Master Plan 2019 includes plans to have 1,000ha more parks and park connectors in Singapore. The rustic charm of the existing wetlands at Hampstead Gardens will be enhanced into a new park for recreation and enjoyment of nature.
Four new large childcare centres will be built in Sengkang by 2019, offering spaces for around 2,000 children. These will be distributed across the town so that families with young children can have access to quality and affordable childcare services. According to Department of Statistics records, Sengkang has the most young children, with 17,660 of its residents aged four and below as of June 2017. The large childcare centres are part of the Government’s commitment to ensure that all parents who need pre-school places for their children will be able to get one. Recently, Sengkang has been featured on CNA Lifestyle as one of the emerging HDB estates to be living in.
Lorong Halus Industrial Estate
With the development of Punggol Digital District and Sengkang West, residents from all the towns in the North-East will now have more choices to jobs near homes. A new employment node is also being developed at Lorong Halus. This is part of plans to bring jobs to every town so that residents can live, work and play all in the same town. Lorong Halus will be progressively developed as a Food, Lifestyle and Logistics cluster, next to the upcoming Defu MRT Station on the Cross Island Line. It will be sensitively designed to be pedestrian-centric, with access to waterfront parks and open spaces for workers and nearby residents to enjoy.
Defu Industrial Park
Dubbed by HDB as “A Green and Sustainable Industrial Park of Tomorrow”, Defu Industrial Estate has been identified by the Government for redevelopment as part of HDB’s ongoing Industrial Redevelopment Programme (IRP). Under the Defu Master Plan, the area will be transformed into a green and sustainable industrial park and be renamed Defu Industrial Park. HDB will also develop a new Defu City Centre, which will be the focal point of commercial activities. Located just beside Defu Industrial City, it will provide a range of amenities such as F&B outlets, convenience stores, medical clinics and childcare centres. Construction will take place after 2017 when the site is available for development.
